Her work challenges the notion of harmony in nature, highlighting how modern landscapes are consumed rather than truly experienced, striving to capture the essence of things beyond the visual through endangered ecosystems. Kotsala, embodies in her work emotions, sensations, mental states — ecological grief, deep sorrow and mourning but also a desire for freedom and self-care. Kotsala’s practice spans oil painting, sculpture, mosaics, land art, glass fusing, and video. Her oil paintings feature abstract brushstrokes with diverse textures, structures, and emotions, often on a large scale, capturing her inner emotional landscapes. In her sculptures, she repurposes dried tree trunks to evoke human forms or transforms replicas of antiquities into non-human beings, stripping away anthropomorphic features.&nbsp; Her use of natural materials such as pistachio shells, glass, marble, and stone is central to her mosaics where she engages in a meticulous, meditative process that pushes the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. In her land art installations, Kotsala constructs “earth constellations” on mountaintops, using solar lights to represent Astrowalker, a recurring bird-man persona she created to weave metaphorical and paradoxical narratives. This character, influenced by prehistoric rock art and extensive field research conducted with an international team of archaeologists, appears throughout her work, embodying both figure and idea. Katerina Kotsala (1982, Thessaloniki) lives and works in Athens, Greece. She holds an MFA from Athens School of Fine Arts and a BFA from the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has been awarded by ARTWORKS in the 1st Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship Program. She represented Greece at the 16th Biennale of Artist Mediterranea ”Errors Allowed” in Italy. It is a proposal for contemporary mythology, an allegory, where the Astrowalker, as a dislocated constellation, reappears in dark, mysterious, and inaccessible places. Only there it can unfold its wings and be seen. On mountains, islands, in landscapes far from light pollution, the Astrowalker strives to unite with the other stars of the sky. Although this is in vain due to their difference, it keeps trying, driven by its impulse for an ideal world. The work thus doesn't refer to the individual imagination of an artist, but rather, it achieves a collective resonance, as an extension of thoughts and questions raised by our times — such as, whether the total disappearance of stars/fireflies has really taken place (see George Didi-Huberman, The Survival of the Fireflies, 2009), or if a silent revolution is starting from the mountains and islands. My first encounter with the human-bird was in 2010, during a research program studying prehistoric rock carvings in nature, in collaboration with archaeologists. It was then that I first noticed a rock carving representing the human-bird in a linear way: it was two rectangles perpendicular to each other, like an abstract human form, that created the sense that the figure was flying. This sense was reinforced by the oblique placement of the drawing on the rock, in relation to the other carvings and the earth, with its background to the east. The persona of the Astrowalker was born out of this experience, which appears regularly in land art constellations since 2012. The Astrowalker “earth constellations” appear in different places each time, embodying the double concept of figure and idea — all the while striving to capture the essence of things beyond the visual, within the context of endangered ecosystems. In 2025, the environmental work Astrowalker Constellation reappears, this time on the island of Didimi, opposite the town of Ermoupolis in Syros, as part of ANIMASYROS. On Didimi stands the first lighthouse in Greece, built in 1835. The lighthouse symbolizes the change of eras, the transition from the historical to the technological period — while it is also a point of orientation, analogous to how travelers have been using constellations since prehistory. In an attempt tο fragment the image through the unification of earth and sky, as well as through an exploration of the poetic potential of materials, the Astrowalker Constellation appears with the use of solar lights, and with minimal luminescence, it tries to be visible from Didimi island across Ermoupolis. There is a mystery, but Astrowalker Constellation reveals itself, by search and focused observation, it is there, you can see it. In order for the Astrowalker to achieve its apparent suspension, 11 “stars” are placed in a bird formation, with a slight tilt on the surface of the island, directed towards the sky. They are waiting for the sun to set and for the earth to become one with the sky, creating an earthly continuation of the stars. The solar lights have a power of 3,5 lumen, which is enough for the artwork to be visible in the natural environment without causing light pollution. They do not affect the environment, they run on solar energy, and they will leave no trace once removed after ANIMASYROS 2025 is over. Indicative visibility points of the project are the Manna area, at Syros Airport and Agios Dimitrios. It is a work based on sustainability. Stars self-exiled from their birth place, their nebula, to become one with the rest of the sky stars. While they were walking around, they discovered a path at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, at the foot of the mountain Saos. In order to seem like they elevate, they set in position of a bird, with sideways tilt on the Moon and direction the mountaintop, waiting for sun to set and earth to turn into sky. The land art Astrowalker's Constellation is formed by 11 solar lights with dimensions 600x450m. Astrowalker’s Nebula is a pebble mosaic floor with dimensions 3x3m.The works were created in Samothrace for the project ELECTRIS I How to think like a mountain, curated by Dimitra Tsiaouskoglou with the support of the NEON organisation. +0000 Katerina Kotsala https://katerinakotsala.com/Dark-Self HOME | Dark Selfvideo installation oil on PVC and plexi glass 350x500x210cm The installation HOME | Dark Self forms an imaginary house, a place of habitation that emerges through light. It consists of a video projection and painting on transparent surfaces, where the slightest dislocation of the projection in space creates the façade of an archetypal house with a roof. In this way, a house made of light is formed, a shell of a house constructed through minimal gesture, bodily and solar energy. The central axis of the work is the concept of energy, light, and minimal gesture: a small shift, a subtle intervention capable of activating light and producing space, constructing image and meaning. Following the approach of Le Corbusier, light helps us perceive space, by defining architecture through light, it becomes an element capable not only of affecting matter but also of shaping it. In the video, matter produces reflections through the energy of nature combined with minimal gesture. The materials, nylon and plexiglass, act as carriers of refraction, making visible the interaction of solar and bodily energy with matter. In the video, sunlight activates the materials and, combined with the gesture of shifting the projection, creates a house of light as the primary place where someone feels safe. Signs of habitation, such as the door and windows, emerge through black, meditative painting on transparent materials. By painting directly with the hands onto the surfaces, the energy of the body is imprinted through gesture, leaving colour as a trace of presence. Painting functions as a counterpoint to transparency: it conceals, deepens, and densifies the surface, creating a dark substrate that awaits the penetration of light. Thus, the work unfolds as a dynamic condition between light and shadow, presence and absence, construction and deconstruction of space. The work, as a study in creativity, explores the potential of humble materials to construct complex experiences through light.
